I am a multidisciplinary artist with roots in design and dance. I am passionate about color, texture, and the power of movement. In all my work, I'm interested in juxtaposing seemingly unconnected, even contradictory elements within a single composition, whether it be collage, couture, or choreography. I want to explore the underside and unspoken aspects of beliefs that are embedded in American culture and/or within myself.
I start with the image or awareness that jumps to the forefront of my mind.
The concept that won't leave me is the one that sparks a cascade of related ideas. I'm excited when layers of absurdity and elegance begin to shape the work. The result, for instance, is a bouquet of flowers bursting out of a tangle of straw and upholstery webbing, and patterned antique whalebone and closure hooks surrounding a slit of padded silk. It's a silvery crushed velvet gown standing inside a sheer red body bag and an apricot tutu paired with a leather harness. It's dancers strutting the runway in hot pants and hospital gowns; or wearing flaming red backpacks and pantsuits adorned with miniature flags.
I strive to create work which is both dissonant and harmonious, enigmatic and humorous, and strange and beautiful. Regardless, a work never evolves exactly as I'd imagined. Instead, I make realizations and discoveries which wouldn't have been possible before. I long for transformation.
